EasyJet is to fit new lighter weight seats in aircraft due for delivery from 2028 in a move it claims will offer up to two inches of additional legroom for passengers.
The airline said the next-generation Kestrel economy seats are expected to be more than 20% lighter than those used currently. They will be fitted across its Airbus A320neo and A321neo fleet for deliveries from 2028.
It said the deal with manufacturer Mirus Aircraft Seating “marks another positive step in easyJet’s ongoing strategy to reduce emissions and fuel burn, while improving operational efficiency”.
The introduction of the Kestrel seats will lead to a weight saving of up to 500kg per aircraft for larger models in the fleet, easyJet said, adding its design and pre-reclined structure would allow “passengers to enjoy improved legroom without changing seat pitch itself” and benefit from “improved knee and shin clearance”.
David Morgan, chief operating officer, said: “We are delighted to be introducing the Mirus Kestrel seat across our future fleet. This investment supports our continued focus on making our operations as efficient as possible, capitalising on small incremental gains that result in meaningful reductions in fuel burn and Co2 emissions.
“On top of the sustainability benefits, the additional legroom and enhanced comfort these seats will provide will also deliver an improved onboard experience for our customers which we know they’ll love.”
